City narrowly beaten in Zurich
 Women's Football News 10 Nov 2014

FC Zurich 2 (Humm 10, Stierli 59) Glasgow City 1 (Brown 52)
Glasgow City have it all to do next Wednesday after losing 2-1 to FC Zurich away from home at the Stadion Letizgrund in front of just under 4,000 spectators for the UEFA Women's Champions League last 16 first leg tie.

Despite an early chance for City as Fiona Brown shot over from an Emma Black cross, the home side looked dangerous with long balls over the top and it was no surprise when they tested Lee Alexander in the City net for the first time just after eight minutes when Barla Deplazes raced through only to be denied by a good save from the City keeper. However, less than a minute later, a similar ball once more caught the City rearguard out and Fabienne Humm took full advantage as she shot unchallenged past Lee Alexander and put her side in the lead.

It was nearly disaster for the away side on the stroke of half time as Julie Nelson brought down Humm just inside the box, but Alexander saved her team mate with an excellent penalty stop to deny Marina Keller.

If City needed a response from a disappointing first half, Fiona Brown showed the way with an exquisite equaliser. Cutting in from the left hand side, the young City striker hit an unstoppable right foot shot into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Zurich regained the lead on 59 minutes when Julia Stierli headed home a dangerous free kick swung in from the right to give her side the advantage once more.

It then got even harder for the Scottish Champions on 76 minutes when full back Nicky Docherty received her second yellow of the game and was subsequently sent off, reducing City to ten players for the remainder of the match.

Worryingly for Eddie Wolecki Black's side is that Brown was stretchered off with five minutes remaining and could be in doubt for the home game. City will also be without Nelson and Docherty through suspension.

Glasgow City will play FC Zurich in the return leg this Wednesday (7.30pm) at Excelsior Stadium, Airdrie. Entry is £5 adult, £2 Under-16s and spectators can pay on the night.
