Wilko and out for Yeovil

Wilko and out for Yeovil - 9 Mar 2015 - Women's Football NewsAston Villa 2 Yeovil Town 1 (aet)
Katie Wilkinson scored an extra time free kick to send Aston Villa into the Fifth Round of the F.A.Women's Cup against fellow WSL side Yeovil Town at Sutton Coldfield.

The win was a deserved one for the home side who also hit the woodwork three times and had a goal disallowed but in an often niggly game, Yeovil, to their credit, dug in and took the game into the extra period when Natalie Haigh's header cancelled out Olivia Fergusson's opening goal.

The game started in heavy rain which made the 3G surface even quicker and both sides took time to adjust to the conditions, resulting in a largely uneventful opening to the game. Indeed, the only main moments of note saw Villa defender Jade Richards try an overhead kick which was fielded by Charlotte Haynes and at the other end, a free kick by Corinne Yorston free kick flew straight at Jess Myers.

Things threatened to boil over at one stage with a couple of scuffles in midfield and a number of yellow cards were shown, including one for Alicia Robinson for a dangerous looking tackle on Ann Marie Heatherson which could have brought a worse punishment.

The two teams continued to cancel each other out until four minutes before half time, when Villa took the lead. The initial danger seemed to have been averted with a clearing header from Ellie Isaac but Emily Owen returned the ball into the area, where Yeovil could not get it away and Fergusson buried a firm shot into the corner of the net.

Suddenly the game burst into life and Villa were inches away from going two ahead as Kerri Welsh broke down the right and her angled shot crashed against the bar with Haynes beaten. Yeovil hit back straight away and Paige Stewart tried her luck from 30 yards with a good effort which soared inches over.

The lively Welsh went close again at the start of the second half, forcing a save from Haynes from a good cross by Elisha N'Dow. However this was a rare opportunity at either end with both teams struggling to break down well organised defences.

Yeovil introduced Vera Bernabe Payol as a second half substitute and she injected some life into the team going forward. Indeed, she almost broke through when latching on to Ellie Curson's pass but Myers was smartly off her line to make a smothering save.

It looked as though Villa were going to see the game out with Yeovil making little impression against their defence, once more superbly marshalled by the excellent Richards, but with five minutes to go, they grabbed the equaliser they craved. Yorston floated in a corner from the right and Haigh planted a firm downward header past Myers at the near post to level the scores.

This took the game into extra time where another corner almost led to Villa regaining their lead. Beth Merrick's kick was met at the far post by Owen whose header was touched onto the post by Haynes. Wilkinson picked up the rebound and drove an angled shot goalwards but Haynes was again well positioned to save.

Yeovil were next to go close when Curson found space on the edge of the area and her well struck shot looked destined for the corner of the net but Myers dived to her right to pull off an outstanding save.

After the restart, Wilkinson hooked a dipping shot goalwards which came back off the bar. Katy Moran followed up to nod the rebound in but her celebrations were cut short by an offside flag.

Four minutes into the second period, a foul just outside the area gave Villa an opportunity to go back in front. The wall was not well positioned, allowing a gap for a shot to find the corner of the net and Wilkinson's shot was perfectly placed, threading the ball past the wall and inside the post.

This time there was no coming back for Yeovil and Villa closed the game out successfully to take their place amongst the WSL 1 sides in the Fifth Round.
