Ruthless Villa spoil Watford's day - 29 Mar 2015 - Women's Football NewsWatford 1 (Wynne 7) Aston Villa 4 (Welsh 17, Robinson 25,33, Wilkinson 32)
Aston Villa recorded their first league victory of the season with a 4-1 succes over Watford at Vicarage Road.
An emphatic opening 45 minutes, with three goals in an eight minute spell, did the damage in front of an attendance of 1,102.
There was plenty of build-up leading up to the historic fixture - the first to be held at Watford FC's home stadium and it certainly didn't disappoint to those of a claret and blue persuasion. Joe Hunt's side played the match and not the occasion and dictated the majority of contest.
A vocal home crowd were on their feet early on, though, as their side were ahead after just seven minutes - skipper Megan Wynne tapped home Hollie Wride's corner.
Villa responded instantly and were almost level as new signing Abi Cottam did well to evade a couple of challenges but could only steer her shot over the crossbar.
The visitors were level soon after as Alicia Robinson's lofted free kick was headed home by Kerri Welsh. Provider then turned scorer moments later and did so in stunning fashion.
After Watford had only partially cleared, the ball fell to Robinson who hit an unstoppable effort into the top corner from 25 yards - one to catch on the highlights.
Olivia Fergusson grew into the half and began to get in behind the home side's back line. She almost made it three, going round Shayla Burgess but Wride managed to clear off the line.
This clearly unnerved the Hornets' stopper as soon after, she brought down Fergusson in the box and referee Tim Donnellan pointed to the spot. Katie Wilkinson stepped up to coolly net her second penalty in as many matches.
Villa continued to bomb forward at every opportunity and the impressive Robinson capitalised on Renee Hector's error to slot home Villa's second goal in a minute to cap off the perfect half for her side.
It was clear the half time message was 'continue where we left off' as the claret and blues were quick out of the traps as the second period got underway. Fergusson was inches from netting a super solo effort following a fine marauding run down the right flank but her shot was just wide of the post. Burgess saved well from Fergusson and kept out a header from point blank range.
Substitute Sarah Mayling made an instant impact, finding space to help carve further opportunities. Her neat through ball from Wilkinson's cutback found Welsh whose strike was just off target.
