Woodley lift Berks & Bucks Trophy

Woodley lift Berks & Bucks Trophy - 30 Mar 2015 - Women's Football NewsWoodley United Res, of the Thames Valley League Division One, lifted the Berks & Bucks FA Trophy with a 4-1 win over Wargrave Ladies at Abingdon United.
A second half hat-trick from Rosie Page-Smith proved decisive as the Division Two South Champions were defeated in difficult conditions with a very strong wind blowing across the pitch coupled with occasional heavy rain showers.
Wargrave took the lead against the run of play when Jodie Penny finished well after a good run and cross by Hannah Sheehan on 22 minutes. Woodley had gone close on several occasions in the opening quarter of an hour with Louise Thompson heading just wide and Page-Smith setting up Mollie Haines for another near miss.
Woodley continued to press after conceding, Morgan Merryweather heading over from a corner but it took until just before the break for the equaliser to arrive, courtesy of a penalty for handball. Skipper Ellen Surtees converted the spot kick and Page-Smith then missed a great chance to send Woodley to the break with a lead, shooting over from close range.
Wargrave keeper Amy Cox made a fine save, tipping over a Merryweather shot from distance to keep the scores level soon after the restart. The Division Two South champions went very close to regaining the lead through Sian Blissett but it was Page-Smith who lit up the last half hour with an excellent triple.
The first came when keeper Cox was penalised for a foul outside her area and the Woodley attacker curled a 25-yarder into the top right corner. The second, on 77 minutes, was a perfect strike from 30 yards just under Cox's bar. Four minutes later Page-Smith clinched the trophy and the match ball with a crisp finish from a right wing cross.
Woodley United Res narrowly missed out on league honours to Kidlington but this was a well earned Trophy success with strong performances all over the pitch. Wargrave Ladies have already earned their success after a hard fought Division Two South campaign won on goal difference from Barton Rovers, who they also beat to earn their place in this Trophy final.
