Dream first season for Hertford

Dream first season for Hertford - 3 May 2015 - Women's Football News

Hertford Town have captured the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire County Women's League Division Two title after holding their nerve in the latter part of the season.
One year ago, Hertford Town Youth coach and ex-Spurs Ladies goalkeeper Chelsea Spurrier had a dream to create the very first women's football team in Hertford and surrounding area. On 10th May 2014, Hertford Town Ladies Football Club was born.
Trials proved extremely successful, resulting in a squad that saw ladies from a plethora of clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur Ladies FC, Arsenal Ladies FC, Billericay Ladies FC, Charlton Ladies FC and several players who had played a high level and had either taken time out or had become disillusioned with the game. From the first trial session, it became apparent that this group of ladies were more than just a team of footballers, they were united with one dream - to be Hertford Town Ladies Football Club.
Pre-season friendlies and the launch match against Tottenham Hotspur Ladies First XI (part of their pre-season tour) soon showed the spark of magic the ladies had as a team together. Matches were regularly being won against teams in higher leagues and a serious message was sent to the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire County Girls' & Women's League as they won their first serious tournament in September 2014. Hertford Town Ladies now believed they were winners!
The league season could not have started better for Hertford as they won all of their nine opening matches and comfortably led the table in February. However they were then beaten in three of their next five games before a 5-0 win over Crawley Green put them back on track and this left them needing to avoid defeat in their final match against title rivals Letchworth Garden City Eagles in order to be crowned as Champions.
As the game went into injury time, Hertford trailed by the only goal of the game but then Hannah Smith scored the all important goal to seal a 1-1 draw which gave her side the point they needed to clinch the title.
In less than one year from being the glimmer of an idea in the mind of one female footballer, Hertford Town Ladies FC have achieved their dream. The ladies are ecstatic to be the league titleholders and have colossal ambitions for the future.
Next season will see a Reserve Team working alongside the First Team; as well as launching girls' teams from Under 18s all the way down to Under 8s! As the Ladies deem this their family, the First Team Ladies players will be getting involved in leading the girls football coaching and inspiring young athletes to reach out and achieve their dreams.
The team is managed by Dave Shephard, with Steve Chivers as Coach. Chelsea Spurrier, whose initial idea sparked off the formation of the club, is goalkeeper and Kerry Oldham captains the team, with Becky Shephard topping their scoring charts with 16 league goals to her name.
There is a further reward for Hertford Town Ladies - due to their success in their first season, the Mayor of Hertford has invited the team to Hertford Castle for a VIP reception.
Hertford Town Ladies squad: Chelsea Spurrier, Nina Witteridge, Samantha Garner, Lauren Barnard, Shelley Anglin, Freya Rampley, Laveena Betts, Charlie Archer, Kerry Oldham, Wendy Rankin, Carly Snell, Olivia Worsfold, Amy Fincher, Hannah Smith, Becky Shephard, Hayley Graham, Amber Strows, Cheryl Hayden.
