Oldland Abbotonians won the Gloucestershire County Women's League title in dramatic fashion with a 4-3 victory over Cheltenham Town Development on Wednesday night.
The title race looked to have been between Cirencester Town and Forest of Dean for much of the season but both teams fell away as the season drew to a close. Almondsbury UWE meanwhile staged a late surge which took them to the top of the table but the north Bristol side ran out of matches, and an even later surge by Oldland saw them needing to win their last six games in order to overtake Almondsbury.
After five wins in a row, Oldland met Cheltenham at Hartpury College having beaten the same opponents 2-0 three days later. They scored two early goals through Jess Morgan with Leanne Godwin pulling one back, before Morgan completed her hat-trick with only twelve minutes on the clock. Ashleigh Lebbon then reduced the arrears from the penalty spot with the final kick of the first half.
In the second half, nerves began to take over the Oldland side as Cheltenham pressed hard for an equaliser but with Jess Britton having an outstanding game in defence, they managed to keep them at bay. However with fourteen minutes remaining, Cheltenham finally equalised when Godwin squared the ball across goal for Lebbon to tuck home her second from close range.
Parity lasted for just five minutes though, Vicky Mundy's pass finding Jess Cole and the stalwart striker burst into the area before crashing an unstoppable shot in off the underside of the bar to put Oldland back in front again.
There were more anxious moments for Steve Lavis' side in near darkness but this time they held on for the win they required in order to be confirmed as Champions. Remarkably this was the first time they had topped the table throughout the entire season.
