Impressive Belles end Yeovil run - 31 May 2015 - Women's Football NewsYeovil Town 0 Doncaster Rovers Belles 3 (Little 29, Sweetman-Kirk 54, Smith pen 67)
Doncaster Rovers Belles produced a fine team display to end Yeovil's six-match unbeaten run and open up a gap six points between the two teams in the WSL 2 table.
The Belles looked determined from the start and nearly took the lead with just three minutes gone when Sue Smith cut in from the right and curled a shot from 25 yards which Charlotte Haynes managed to tip onto the bar and over.
Yeovil responded with Ellie Curson getting behind the Belles defence as she latched onto Helen Bleazard's pass and her low ball into the area picked out Paige Stewart but the midfielder missed her kick in front of goal. The ball was cleared as far as Ann Marie Heatherson whose low shot was well saved by Nicola Hobbs.
Doncaster were looking in good shape though with Kasia Lipka and Sophie Barker commanding the midfield area and they took the lead just before the half hour. Following a foul on Smith, Barker's free kick was initially headed away by Nicola Cousins but Sweetman-Kirk returned the ball into the area with a superb cross for Leandra Little to rise highest and beat Haynes with a downward header into the far corner.
The goalscorer Little was having a fine match at the back for her side and made good challenges to prevent Heatherson and Natasha Knapman from getting through on goal. A Bleazard corner did lead to a chance for the home side but Corinne Yorston's looping header was narrowly off target.
The Belles had a great opportunity to extend their lead just before half time when Barker won the ball in midfield and threaded it through for Sweetman-Kirk but the striker's shot was touched wide by Haynes, although a goal kick was given.
Doncaster picked up the pace once again from the start of the second half and a Barker corner was headed on by Little for Sweetman-Kirk whose header was saved at close range by Haynes.
The early pressure told with the Belles increasing their advantage within ten minutes of the restart. The second goal also came following a foul on Smith, this time Barker drilled a low free kick which went through a crowd of players in the area with Sweetman-Kirk reacting quickly to run in and slot the ball home from eight yards.
Sweetman-Kirk had looked sharp up front all game and the striker got on the end of a cross from deep by Barker, her header flying straight at Haynes. Doncaster didn't have to wait too long for their third goal though, Cousins leaving her back pass short and Smith nipped in to beat Haynes to the ball as she tried to clear, being brought down in the process.
A penalty was awarded and Smith picked herself up to give Haynes no chance from the spot with a sweetly struck shot into the roof of the net.
Yeovil tried hard to reduce the deficit with Heatherson doing well to chase down a long ball and held off Little before finding Alys Hinchcliffe whose angled shot was smothered by Hobbs. Doncaster responded by going back on the attack themselves and Lauren Cresswell whipped in a cross for Emma Johnson to send a header just off target.
Hinchcliffe shot wide after breaking through on goal and Heatherson chased after a long clearance from Haynes and her attempted first time volley was off target.
Nicole Dale was close to scoring with her first touch after coming on as a substitute when her far post header from Smith's cross was just off target. The Belles therefore go into the mid-season break in a strong position, level on points with leaders Reading FC Women at the halfway stage.
