Queen's Park Rangers have been invited as special guests to the Abbey Stadium at the end of July for a commemorative match to celebrate Cambridge Women's merger with Cambridge United FC. It follows the news that Cambridge Women will change its name to Cambridge United Women's Football Club and operate with full assistance from the U's as the two clubs join forces. The formation of the club - currently in the FA Women's Premier League South East Division One, one tier below QPR - will be marked with a special promotional launch match on Thursday 30th July* against Rangers. R's manager Martino Chevannes has welcomed the move and is looking forward to the trip to East Anglia, telling www.qprlfc.co.uk: "It's an honour for us to be asked to be part of the celebrations. "It's great to see another women's football team coming under the umbrella of the men's football club. It can only serve to benefit them both on and off the pitch." The match also represents the R's first confirmed pre-season fixture as Rangers prepare for a second successive season in the FA Women's Premier League Southern Division. Rangers ran out 4-1 winners when the sides met in the Premier League Cup last season, but Chevannes knows the hosts will provide a stern test before the real business begins again in August. "It was a really competitive fixture when we played each other in the cup," he added. "The scoreline may suggest otherwise but Cambridge could easily have won on that day and it'll certainly be a useful exercise for us as we look to build on our first season back in the FAWPL. "It's also an opportunity for our side to play at a Football League men's stadium, under lights, which will be a fantastic experience alone. It should be a great occasion." * Further details regarding the fixture will be announced in due course.
