Martens super strike earns points for Holland
 Women's Football News 7 Jun 2015
New Zealand 0 Holland 1 (Martens 33)
Holland's first ever appearance in a World Cup Finals match turned out to be a winning one as a superb first half strike from Lieke Martens earned them victory against New Zealand.
Annalie Longo drilled a long range shot which Lois Geurts did well to hold on to at full stretch and the Dutch keeper also did well to claw away a curling free kick from Ria Percival which had looked destined for the top corner.
Holland had got the ball in the net through Danielle Van De Donk, her effort being ruled out for offside, but as the game reached the 33 minute mark, there was no doubt about their strike. Martens received the ball on the left from Manon Melis and took a couple of touches before unleashing a shot beyond the dive of Erin Nayler and into the far corner to give her side the lead.
There was a momentary scare for the Dutch at the other end when a cross by Hannah Wilkinson briefly threatened their goal but Geurts was able to gather and Holland took their lead going into the interval.
In the second half, with New Zealand pressing forward, Betsy Hassett's long range shot was comfortably saved by Geurts but shortly afterwards, after being fed in the area by Hassett, Wilkinson appeared to be baulked by a challenge from the goalscorer Martens. It looked to be a very strong case for a penalty but New Zealand appeals were turned away.
