Norway 4 (Ronning 15, Herlovsen 29,34, Hegerberg 68) Thailand 0
Norway eased to victory in their opening World Cup match against debutants Thailand in Ottawa.
The Euro 2013 runners-up went into the game as overwhelming favourites but should really have gone a goal down with just five minutes on the clock. Kanjana Sung-Ngoen showed good pace when attacking down the right and drilled a low cross into the centre for Silawan Intamee who missed her kick in front of goal with only Ingrid Hjelmseth to beat.
This was only a fleeting glimpse of goal for the Thais though and Norway began to dominate from this point. They were unlucky not to take the lead when Isabell Herlovsen clipped a pinpoint cross into the area for Ada Hegerberg whose powerful header hit the post.
The first goal was not too long in coming though and after Hegerberg went close again, they won a free kick on the edge of the area on the quarter hour mark. Trine Ronning duly curled her shot over the wall and into the corner, Waraporn Boonsing getting a hand to the ball but failing to keep it out.
Norway continued to press for further goals and a great passing move led to their second, Hegerberg and Solveig Gulbrandsen combining to set up Herlovsen who evaded her marker before driving home from twelve yards.
Before Thailand could recover, they found themselves three goals behind. Gulbrandsen was again the architect, tricking her way past two opponents before her cross picked out Herlovsen, who took advantage of some dreadful defending to nod home from point blank range.
The pattern of the game continued in the second half with Norway well in command but it wasn't until midway through that they increased their advantage. Kristine Minde was the creator this time with a speedy run down the right and her low centre was tucked home from six yards by Hegerberg, to give the goal that the young striker's performance deserved.
Norway were handed a great chance to go further ahead with fifteen minutes remaining, when Elise Thornes carried the ball towards goal and her shot struck the arm of Duangnapa Sritala. A penalty was awarded and Maren Mjelde stepped up to take the kick, but her shot brought out a good diving save from Boonsing who dived low to her right.
Orathai Srimanee did strike the bar for Thailand in injury time but all in all it was a satisfying start for Norway who are well on course for a place in the last sixteen following this result.
