Montoya strike pegs back Mexico
 Women's Football News 10 Jun 2015

Colombia 1 (Montoya 82) Mexico 1 (Perez 36)
Mexico were denied victory a fine late strike from Daniela Montoya as both teams had to settle for a point in their opening World Cup group match.

Mexico started the brighter of the two sides in the same windy conditions which had affected the England-France match beforehand. However it was Colombia who were first to get the ball in the net, although Yoreli Rincon's celebrations were cut short by an offside flag.

Lady Andrade glanced a header just wide but Mexico grew stronger as the half wore on and they took the lead nine minutes before half time. A short corner saw Veronica Perez swing a cross into the goalmouth and although Stefany Castano tried to keep it out, a goal was awarded after the use of goal line technology for the first time in the competition.

Mexico took their lead into half time but the frustration continued after the break for Colombia as they had a second goal disallowed, this time after a pass from Orianica Velasquez was not dealt with by Valeria Miranda, Montoya was deemed to have handballed as she nipped in to plant the ball past Cecilia Santiago.

Shortly afterwards, Rincon whipped in a dangerous free kick from near the touchline which was touched onto the post by Santiago. Mexico hit back with Renae Cuellar going close to extending their lead.

With eight minutes remaining, Colombia brought themselves level in stunning fashion. Tatiana Ariza did well to control a pass from Diana Ospina before laying the ball back for Montoya to crash a shot home off the underside of the bar with Santiago well beaten.

There was still time for a third goal to be disallowed in the match, albeit this time from a poor decision. Stephany Mayor was harshly penalised for what looked to be an innocuous challenge as her knock down was bundled in by Charlyn Corral, denying Mexico what would have been a late winner.

Colombia: Stefany Castano, Angela Clavijo, Natalia Gaitan, Diana Ospina (sub Yisela Cuesta 88mins), Nataly Arias, Daniela Montoya, Lady Andrade (sub Tatiana Ariza 77mins), Carolina Arias, Orianica Velasquez, Yoreli Rincon, Catalina Usme (sub Ingrid Vidal 78mins).

Mexico: Cecilia Santiago, Kenti Robles, Christina Murillo, Alina Garciamendez, Valeria Miranda, Veronica Perez, Nayeli Rangel, Renae Cuellar (sub Jennifer Ruiz 79mins), Charlyn Corral, Stephany Mayor, Monica Ocampo (sub Fabiola Ibarra 87mins).
