Records tumble in Brazil victory
 Women's Football News 10 Jun 2015
Brazil 2 (Formiga 33, Marta pen 53) South Korea 0
Brazil began their World Cup campaign with a comfortable victory in a match saw goalscorers Formiga and Marta both break tournament records.
Brazil began the game brightly but had a momentary scare when Yoo Younga went down under a challenge from Fabiana in the area, however play was waved on.
Fabiana was heavily involved at the other end with a long range drive which crashed against the bar, while the Brazilians began to increase the pressure on the Korean defence.
That pressure told just after the half hour when Brazil opened the scoring, albeit from a catastrophic defensive error. There seemed little danger when Cristiane was crowded out by three defenders but Kim Doyeon was too casual with her backpass which she underhit badly, allowing Formiga to nip in and prod the ball past Kim Jungmi. The goal made history as 37-year-old Formiga - who also equalled Homare Sawa's record of playing in six tournaments - became the World Cup's oldest goalscorer, beating the record previous held by Charmaine Hooper of Canada.
Eight minutes into the second half, more sloppy defending left South Korea with a mountain to climb. Another sloppy pass in the area was seized on by the impressive Formiga who was brought down by Cho Sohyun for a penalty. This left Marta with the task of sending Kim Jungmi the wrong way from the spot for a goal which confirmed her as the tournament's all time leading goalscorer, going one ahead of Birgit Prinz.
South Korea tried to rally and get themselves back into the game, going closest when Ji So Yun laid the ball off for Jeon Gaeul whose shot was deflected wide.
However this was only a fleeting moment for the Asian side and Brazil almost made it three late on when Formiga and Cristiane combined to set up a golden chance for Marta but the superstar striker was foiled by a brilliant saving tackle from Lee Eunmi.
Brazil: Luciana, Fabiana, Monica, Rafaelle (sub Gessica 82mins), Andressa (sub Raquel Fernandes 81mins), Tamires, Formiga, Thaisa, Andressa Alves (sub Rafaela 90mins), Marta, Cristiane.

South Korea: Kim Jungmi, Lee Eunmi, Kwon Hahnul (sub Lee Sodam 77mins), Shim Seoyeon, Kim Doyeon, Kang Yumi (sub Park Heeyoung 90mins), Jeon Gaeul, Cho Sohyun, Yoo Younga (sub Jung Seolbin 67mins), Ji So Yun, Kim Hyeri.
