Australia 2 (Simon 29,68) Nigeria 0
Australia gave their qualification hopes a huge shot in the arm after a goal in each half from Kyah Simon earned them the points against Nigeria.
The Super Falcons started the game brightly but it was Australia who began to wrest control of matters as the first half wore on.
Chances were few at either end during the early stages but just before the half hour mark, Australia took the lead. Lisa De Vanna drove at the Nigerian defence after picking up the ball just inside their half and slipped a through ball to Simon, who neatly lifted a left foot shot over Precious Dede and into the far corner of the net.
The Matildas sought a second goal and it nearly came when a strike from Simon was charged down and De Vanna tried to volley home the rebound but it was just off target.
Nigeria began to threaten at the other end and looked like breaking through at one stage but Desire Oparanozie was denied by a sliding challenge from Aussie goalkeeper Lydia Williams, whilst Ngozi Okobi was over the bar with a volley from distance.
Williams did well to turn away a well struck free kick from Oparanozie but at the other end, Australia always looked sharp going forward and they doubled their lead midway through the second half. The Nigeria defence was unable to fully clear a cross from the right and Samantha Kerr returned the ball into the area for two unmarked players, Tameka Butt was unable to reach but Simon managed to hook her shot past Dede for her second goal of the game.
Australia continued to look for more goals with De Vanna bursting through and having a shot saved from Dede, whilst Laura Alleway was unlucky not to score when she struck the bar from close range.
