Brazil progress after hard fought win
 Women's Football News 14 Jun 2015
Brazil 1 (Alves 44) Spain 0
Brazil became the second team to guarantee themselves qualification to the next phase after a hard fought 1-0 win against Spain, whose own future in the competition lies in the balance.
Spain started the match well and worked hard in the midfield areas before creating the game's first clear cut chance. Alexia Putellas' long ball released Natalia Pablos Sanchon on goal and the striker made her way into the area but dragged her shot horribly wide with only Luciana to beat. Then, a cross by Marta Corredera took a wicked deflection off Rafaelle and looked to have beaten a wrong footed Luciana but the ball bounced inches wide.
The game remained a tight affair with Brazil struggling to break down a well organised Spanish side until a minute before half time. Tamires clipped a neat pass over the defence, Andressa Alves running through to slide her shot past Ainhoa Tirapu and although Celia Jiminez did superbly to slide back and hook the ball off the line, she was unable to get any distance on the clearance and Alves was able to tuck her shot home at the second attempt.
Alves almost added a second after the break when she hit the side netting with a powerful strike after having been fed by Andressa. who was next to produce a threatening effort with a 25-yard shot which was tipped over by Tirapu.
Spain remained in the game and created a good chance when Priscila Borja whipped in a cross which was stabbed wide by Natalia under pressure from Monica.
At the other end, Marta did well to get on the end of a deep cross and keep the ball in play, cutting it back for Formiga to drive her shot wide from eight yards.
Spain threw players forward in search of an equaliser and were unlucky not to level the scores when a Veronica Boquete shot was deflected as far as Irene Paredes whose angled strike beat Luciana but came back off the post. Brazil then had a chance to sew up the match with a counter attack in which Marta carried the ball forward and set up Raquel Fernandes but her touch was heavy and Tirapu was able to smother.
Brazil: Luciana, Fabiana (sub Poliana 77mins), Monica, Rafaelle, Andressa, Tamires, Formiga, Thaisa (sub Darlene 60mins), Andressa Alves, Marta, Cristiane (sub Raquel Fernandes 89mins).

Spain: Ainhoa Tirapu, Celia Jimenez, Leire Landa, Marta Corredera (sub Priscila Borja 70mins), Marta Torrejon, Virginia Torrecilla (sub Sonia Bermudez 77mins), Natalia Pablos Sanchon (sub Silvia Meseguer 71mins), Vicky Losada, Veronica Boquete, Irene Paredes, Alexia Putellas.
