Brazil end Costa Rica's chances
 Women's Football News 18 Jun 2015
Brazil 1 (Fernandes 83) Costa Rica 0
A much changed Brazil side ensured that they emulated Japan's feat of winning all three of their group matches to sweep into the last sixteen in confident mood.
However for the Costa Ricans, who had won many friends for their battling performances, it spelt the end of their World Cup campaign whereas a draw in the South Korea-Spain match would have seen them go through.
Brazil had already won the group before the match and took the chance to rest several key players but still carried the game to Costa Rica and created a number of chances. Gabriela had a goal ruled out for offside and Darlene fired a shot narrowly wide after beating two players.
Darlene forced a smart save from Dinnia Diaz and Rosana missed a good opportunity before Costa Rica created their best opening of the game when Shirley Cruz whipped a cross into the area and Raquel Rodriguez Cedeno headed straight at Luciana.
Brazil continued to press after the break with Rafaelle sliding a great ball into the path of Beatriz whose shot was turned over the bar by Diaz.
Diaz made another good save at her near post from Rosana as she met a cross on the volley and Raquel Fernandes also saw a low drive saved after being teed up on the edge of the area by Rosana.
With seven minutes left, Costa Rica's resistance was finally broken. Andressa clipped a fine ball over the defence and into the path of Raquel Fernandes, who steadied herself and although Diaz got a hand to her shot, she could not keep it out and Brazil were ahead.
Costa Rica tried to respond with Cedeno finding Melissa Herrera in the area but she was crowded out by the Brazilian defence and their final chance was gone.
Brazil: Luciana, Poliana, Monica (sub Gessica 66mins), Rafaelle, Andressa, Tamires, Rosana, Maurine, Raquel Fernandes, Gabriela (sub Rafaela 78mins), Darlene (sub Beatriz 59mins).
