Canada keep dream alive
 Women's Football News 22 Jun 2015
Canada 1 (Belanger 52) Switzerland 0
Host nation Canada kept their World Cup dream alive as they progressed to the quarter finals with a narrow 1-0 victory over Switzerland.
In front of a record crowd of 53,855, a solitary strike from Josee Belanger sent the Canadians through but they were also grateful to goalkeeper Erin McLeod for a vital save during the later stages.
McLeod was called into action early on when she needed to save from Ramona Bachmann but it was a rare sight on goal for either side as they cancelled each other out during the opening half.
In fact, it was Belanger who came closest to opening the scoring as she broke down the right and sent in a cross which dipped over Gaelle Thalmann and struck the inside of the far post, with Selina Kuster on hand to clear.
The stalemate was broken seven minutes into the second half and sent the home fans wild. Rhian Wilkinson clipped the ball into the area, Christine Sinclair managed to get to the ball first and poke it aside for Belanger to turn a left foot shot home from twelve yards.
Ana Maria Crnogorcevic passed up a good opportunity at the other end when she sent a free header harmlessly over the bar from a free kick but it was Canada who were to go close to a second shortly afterwards, Allysha Chapman's cross into the area seeing Melissa Tancredi challenging Thalmann and the ball dropped for Belanger whose shot was cleared off the line by Caroline Abbe.
Switzerland then had a fantastic chance to level the scores. Bachmann was once again the instigator as she tricked her way to the line, her low cross was miscued by Kaylyn Kyle and fell for Vanessa Bernauer whose shot on the turn was saved at point blank range by McLeod.
Jonelle Filigno shot wide from close range after being set up by Sophie Schmidt but Canadian celebrations could begin shortly afterwards and they will face either Norway or England in the quarter finals.
