Sunderland edge local derby
 Women's Football News 23 Jul 2015
Durham Women 1 (Wilson 84) Sunderland 2 (Ramshaw 71, Moorhouse og 90)
Sunderland opened their Continental Tyres Cup campaign with a last minute win over local rivals Durham at New Ferens Park.
In a tight affair, Keira Ramshaw opened the scoring fourteen minutes from time when she smashed the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box. The hosts hit back, however, after Sarah Wilson pounced to prod home at the back post following a scramble from a corner.
With the game seemingly up, Sunderland were handed a lifeline as Victoria Greenwell's corner drifted towards goal, Durham keeper Anna Moorhouse could only palm the ball into the back of her own net.
It was Abbey Joice who proved to be Sunderland's first half menace, testing Moorhouse several times from distance after finding space on the edge of the box. It was Durham who forced the only clear chance of the first half after Abby Holmes' defensive header looped up and off the bar, before Beth Hepple's follow up was bravely blocked on the line by Steph Bannon.
Just a minute later Moorhouse was out at the feet of Rachel Furness, blocking the midfielder's shot from point blank range as she got in behind the defence.
Sunderland started the second period more brightly and Moorhouse had to be alert to tip a Greenwell drive from eight yards past the post.
With the clock ticking down Sunderland finally made the breakthrough after substitutes Beth Mead and Brooke Chaplen combined in the box to set up Ramshaw, her right footed drive across goal finding the top corner.
McDougall and Stephanie Roche went close to adding to the Sunderland lead before former Sunderland player Natalie Gutteridge took advantage of a lapse in the Lady Black Cats' defence to prod the ball against the post from eight yards.
Mead then headed the ball over last defender Wilson, winning the foot race but failing to beat Moorhouse who spread herself well to block with her left foot.
Durham found their breakthrough with six minutes to go as Gutteridge rose to meet a corner and head it on goal, Olsen could only parry to the back post where Wilson stabbed the ball home.
With the game entering injury time Sunderland sealed the win with a slice of luck as Greenwood's corner drifted toward goal, Moorhouse failed to get a proper hand to it and the ball fell beyond the goal line.
