Oxford Utd 0 Yeovil Town 1 (Hill 15)
A first half goal by teenager Sarah Hill separated the sides as Yeovil Town narrowly got the better of a competitive Continental Tyres Cup match at Abingdon.
Both teams had made a number of changes to their starting line up and Yeovil in particular were fielding a very youthful side which included two 16-year-olds and several other teenagers. Jamie Sherwood's side started the game quickly with Sarah Wiltshire forcing a near post save from Hannah Cox with a free kick and the Welsh international was heavily involved as they took the lead on the quarter hour.
Corinne Yorston's pass released Wiltshire down the left and she whipped in a delightful cross for Hill to head firmly home from six yards for her first goal at this level.
Oxford tried to respond quickly with a looping header from Helen King bouncing on the bar following a corner but Yeovil were in the ascendancy at this stage and almost doubled their lead when Stacey Pearson crashed a shot against the bar from just outside the area.
The home side began to look sharper going forward and went close to equalising as Lauren Allison did well to reach the goal line before cutting the ball back for Ella Franklin-Fraiture whose shot hit the side netting. King did well to fashion herself a chance on the edge of the area, holding off a number of challenges before her effort sailed inches over the bar.
Oxford made a double substitution at half time with Sahara Osborne-Ricketts and Holly Pickett entering the fray but it was Yeovil who attacked early with a Yorston cross which Cox needed to punch away under pressure from Alys Hinchcliffe.
Shortly afterwards, Franklin-Fraiture intercepted a bad ball out of defence but the skilful midfielder was unable to hit the target with her resulting shot. Laura Low then almost dispossessed Nicky Lipscombe in front of goal but the substitute keeper was able to recover and avert the danger.
The game flowed from end to end with Oxford committed forward and Yeovil hitting on the break. Indeed, the Glovers looked to be in for a chance for a second goal when Hinchcliffe was through on goal but she was denied as Rosie Lane pulled off an excellent saving tackle as she was about to shoot.
Stephanie Beck fired wide for Yeovil, moments after coming on as a substitute, then Wiltshire worked an opening on the edge of the area before unleashing a powerful strike which was tipped over the bar by Cox. The resulting corner, taken by Yorston, was headed wide by Jodi Cornwall.
Oxford pushed hard for an equaliser with Kayleigh Hines and Allison both going close with headers, then a ball forward by Isi Meade picked out Hines with only Lipscombe to beat, however she miscued her attemped lob.
Yeovil finished the game strongly with Yorston powering forward before her shot struck the bar, and Wiltshire sending a left foot shot wide after outpacing the Oxford defence, but in the end it was Hill's first half header which proved to be decisive.
