Arsenal 2 (Carter 59, Natalia 68) Notts County 1 (Clarke 4)
Arsenal recorded a fine comeback victory over Notts County to go second in the WSL 1 table on a miserably wet afternoon at Boreham Wood FC.
Trailing at the break to an early Jess Clarke goal, Arsenal scored twice from corners to turn the contest around and take a very satisfying three points which their almost constant pressure and increasingly fluent play merited.
Clarke latched on to a through ball from Leanne Crichton, rounded Emma Byrne and netted in the fourth minute for a neatly taken opener. Undeterred, the Gunners pressed forward with Danielle Carter leading the line very effectively. A turn and low shot from close range drew a superb reaction save from the returning Carly Telford and Natalia Pablos Sanchon went close with a near post header from the resulting corner, taken by Rachel Yankey.
Marta Corredera went very close with a 20-yard drive which flew past the angle of post and bar whilst Emma Mitchell was just over from 35 yards. Little more had been seen of the County attack after their early success, but they took their advantage into the break.
Dominique Janssen crashed an early effort off Telford's bar then Jade Bailey hit another crisp shot just over on 53 minutes. Telford was in commanding form, beating away a Chioma Obagagu drive then holding a Carter shot from close range.
The equaliser came from a Corredera corner, powered home from close range by Carter's header just before the hour.
Chloe Kelly was introduced on the right side and showed real promise with some composed passing and a low shot which tested Telford at her near post on 65 minutes.
The comeback was completed from another Corredera corner some minutes later. This time Jemma Rose headed against the bar and Sanchon managed to turn the ball over the line before Telford could scoop the ball away.
Notts County pushed forward and introduced Ellen White and it was the England star who came closest to equalising, a close range header producing a fine save from Byrne. Another young player, Lotte Wubben-Moy, was brought to shore up the home defence in the final minutes and although some pressure gave the visitors hope of salvaging a point, Arsenal stood firm to the end for a hard earned win.
