Coventry Utd made a huge impact on their return to the Southern Division this season, recording a 5-0 victory over West Ham Utd.
Nikki Miles headed Coventry into an early lead, which they took into half time, but midway through the second half, Maz Gauntlett doubled their advantage. Miles headed in a second, Helen Dermody joining her on the scoresheet before Amanda Whalley completed the scoring with a 30-yard lob.
Last season's runners-up Brighton & Hove Albion have also started the new campaign well, beating newly promoted Forest Green Rovers 4-0. Jay Blackie headed the Seagulls in front on the quarter hour, with Deanna Cooper adding a second ten minutes later. Forest Green battled hard to keep themselves in the game but just after the hour, Lucy Somes fired home the third from close range and Kirsty Barton netted the final goal with eight minutes remaining.
Four second half goals proved to be decisive as Lewes defeated Plymouth Argyle 4-1. The game was goalless at the break but within five minutes of the restart, Charlotte Carter and Kelly Newton had put the Rookettes two goals ahead. Cherelle Khassal went on to record a brace late on to seal a good day for the Sussex side.
Tottenham Hotspur were narrow 2-1 winners in their local derby against Queen's Park Rangers. All of the goals came in the first half, Bianca Baptiste sending Spurs into an early lead which was cancelled out just after the half hour by Jo Wilson. Alex Keown headed Tottenham back in front and despite a well contested second half, neither side could add to the scoring and Tottenham held on for the three points.
In the game of the day, Champions Portsmouth returned home from Cardiff City Ladies with a 1-0 victory under their belts. The only goal of the game came eighteen minutes from time, substitute Shannon Sievwright scoring with her first touch after coming on.
The other promoted side, C & K Basildon, recorded a very creditable 1-1 draw in their first match against highly fancied Charlton Athletic. Sara Sinclair fired C & K into a fifteenth minute lead, with Gemma Shepherd earning the Addicks a share of the spoils with the equaliser on half time.
