Chichester take the honours

Chichester City 2 Southampton Saints 1
Chichester City completed a quickfire 'double' over Southampton Saints with a 2-1 FAWPL Division One South West victory to go with Sunday's League Cup Determining Round win.

In front of a crowd of 208, City notched a goal in each half and, despite a late scare when Saints skipper Krystal Whyte reduced the deficit, took a deserved win with a stylish display.

In fact, Saints started the better and had three long range efforts on Sally-Anne Thompson's goal in the first ten minutes but Chi soon settled and started to threaten. Only a superb reaction save by Hannah Haughton prevented Kally Ambler from opening the scoring and with Jade Widdows getting in good positions on the right, Southampton's defence was at full stretch.

However, it took a moment of brilliance from Lucie Challen to break the deadlock on 39 minutes. Receiving the ball on the run, the wing back burst past two defenders before driving a shot beyond Haughton.

Chichester stepped up their play after the break, doubling their lead before the hour. A Jenna Fowlie throw in found Tammy Waine who beat a defender and, from a tight angle, lofted a cross for Widdows to finish on the far post. Haughton made a fine save from a Waine shot from distance and the hosts looked very comfortable with Saints unable to mount any real threat until Whyte broke clear on the right and finished powerfully past Thompson on 86 minutes.

Amazingly Saints went close to an equaliser within a minute when Whyte broke free again and shot across goal and a follow up effort was deflected just wide of the post. After this flurry, Chichester saw out the game very effectively for a good win which maintains their promising start. With an experienced core to the starting line up, City look a very effective unit whilst Saints will look to bounce back from a very difficult opening set of matches.
