Wimborne Town 8 Pen Mill 0
Wimborne Town gave a brilliant display in their first ever competitive match, scoring eight without reply in their SSE Women's FA Cup First Round Qualifying match against Pen Mill.
The newly formed team, about to start their Dorset County Women's League campaign, raced into a five-goal lead inside the first half hour against their Somerset County League opponents with some sparkling play to delight most of the three figure crowd at Cuthbury.
The visitors regrouped well either side of the break and limited the damage but could not prevent a heavy defeat. Leigh Bartlett was the star with a personal tally of four goals but teamwork, crisp passing and good movement marked a stunning first 90 minutes.
Bartlett opened her account in the second minute and Hollie Lemon powered a header just wide before Bartlett converted skipper Kerry Shiers' through ball for the second. Pen Mill keeper Becca Roberts denied Bartlett well before a Shiers run and cross forced an own goal third on 19 minutes.
Bartlett duly completed her hat-trick with a low effort on 24 minutes and Caitlin Steele scored with a fine shot from the edge of the area a minute later.
Things threatened to get embarrassing for the visitors but they lifted their game, getting in more tackles and challenges and trying to show more attacking intent. Amy Jones had their first effort on goal and they forced a couple of corners.
After the break, the match continued to be more even with Pen Mill trying to threaten Erin Leonard's goal but the Wimborne defenders stood firm.
It was Bartlett who added the sixth on 58 minutes, again sent clear of the defence before finishing well. Shiers put a chance over the bar before home keeper Leonard was forced into her first serious action, diving to tip a shot away for a corner on 69 minutes.
Wimborne seemed determined to keep a clean sheet with Leonard again in action on 81 minutes but two further goals late on made the score rather more harsh on the visitors who had battled well in the final hour of the contest.
First, Shiers scored the goal her all action display deserved, a solo effort on 86 minutes, then Lucy Cuff added the eighth after a corner was cleared to the edge of the box. There was still time for Jess Marshallsay to fire inches wide but the final whistle drew prolonged applause from the watching public for a spirited display by all on a very warm afternoon.
Many of the Wimborne Town players have been playing junior football together since the age of twelve and this was the next step on a long term project for this ambitious club, whose next Cup test will be against Southampton Women of the Southern Regional League in two weeks, after a league debut at Dorchester Town.
