Woolton Ladies v Mersey Girls
 Women's Football News 19 Sep 2015

SSE Women's FA Cup - Road to the Final
Woolton Ladies pulled off one of the results of the round in beating Blackpool 6-0 and they have another home tie in the Second Round Qualifying. Their opponents will be familiar to them as they also play in the North West Women's League Division One South - Mersey Girls, who reached this stage by beating Workington Reds 2-1 with goals from Paige Tinsley and Rachel Fortune.

Mersey Girls FC were established in 2008, following the re-organisation of grass roots football across the Merseyside area. Girls who did not wish to become part of the Football Academy set up and who had previously represented Everton and Liverpool football clubs at junior level up to the age of 12 were left looking for a high standard grass roots football team to continue with their enjoyment of playing the game. Hence Mersey Girls FC were formed, attracting quality players from across the Merseyside and Cheshire region.

Mersey Girls went on to score immediate success at Junior and Youth level within the Liverpool County League, Lancashire League and West Lancashire League. Notable achievements have included domestic League and Cup success, as well as prestigious tournament wins across the UK in the All Cities Elite Shield (ACES) tournament at Under-16 level in 2011 and international success in Europe.

In 2013-14 Mersey Girls stepped up to Open Age level for the first time, achieving a League and Cup Double within the Liverpool County League to gain immediate promotion to step 4 of the women's football pyramid and entry into the North West Women's Regional Football League. They consolidated their position in 2014-15, achieving a very respectable third place finish.

Several of the squad have progressed and developed together right through the junior age ranks from Under-12s football to Open Age. The club has been managed by Gary Kennedy and supported by Paul McDonnell throughout this time. The club has attracted additional players each season due to the sustained success that the club has achieved throughout our brief history. Rachel Fortune wears the captain's armband whilst Gary Owens undertakes the role of Secretary.
