Wales suffer nightmare start
 Women's Football News 22 Sep 2015

Austria 3 (Schiechtl 25, Puntigam 73, Burger 86) Wales 0
It was a frustrating opening match to the UEFA Women's Euro qualifying campaign for Wales as Jayne Ludlow, in her first competitive match in charge, saw her team slump to a 3-0 defeat in Austria.

During the early stages of the match, neither team were able to take control but as the first half progressed, Austria looked the most dangerous.

Wales were dealt a blow in the 25th minute when Jo Price failed to take control of a free kick that was sent into the box by Carina Wenninger, allowing Katharina Schiechtl the chance to head Austria into a 1-0 lead.

Shortly after, Nia Jones had a chance to equalise when she got on the end of the ball with a header but she sent her effort over Manuela Zinsberger's crossbar.

Austria nearly inflicted more pain on Wales during the 34th minute of play when Laura Feiersinger broke through but hit the post before Price saved well from the follow up.

Three minutes after the interval, Wales had an excellent chance to equalise when Jess Fishlock broke through. The midfielder squared the ball to Helen Ward but the Reading striker fired wide of the post.

Wales were made to rue that missed chance in the 73rd minute when they conceded once again from a set piece. Sarah Puntigam crossed the ball and although Price got her hand to it, the corner went directly into the net for 2-0.

Austria ensured victory with a third goal in the 86th minute when Nicole Billa played Nina Burger through to nestle the ball in the back of the net.

The next qualifying match for Wales is on 23rd October when they travel to Norway, who are top seeds in the group and have won the competition on two occasions.
