New Forest 0 Poole Town 12
Poole Town earned an SEE Women's FA Cup Third Round Qualifying tie away to FAWPL club Chichester City after winning their delayed match against New Forest by twelve goals at Romsey Town FC.
The South West League Eastern Division team overwhelmed their Southern Regional League Division One opponents with a display of pace and power, although no less than five of the dozen were scored in the final ten minutes.
A series of unfortunate events had meant that New Forest had played just five minutes of competitive football in the first month of their season, their league encounter with Fleet Town being abandoned due to a serious injury. Poole had a single league victory to their name and started briskly by penning the hosts back in their own half, but it took 16 minutes for the first goal to arrive, Samantha Gubb playing in Megan Knell for a good finish.
Rebecca Yeo had gone very close with a 40 yard effort just over and Forest keeper Jess Churcher made a series of good saves, the best of which was a point blank block to deny Rebecca Miller on 25 minutes.
Jessica Fowell added the second on 27 minutes with a curling finish from distance before Sacha Paynter scored the best of the dozen, volleying home on the turn after a shot had been blocked on 37 minutes. Another fierce strike from Paynter and a fifth from Yeo came before the break, with Miller hitting the underside of the bar with the last kick of the half.
Churcher continued to defy Poole on the restart until she picked up a hand injury which forced Ellie Charlton to take over between the posts. Gubb notched Poole's sixth but the substitute keeper continued the defiance with a string of good saves to frustrate each of the Poole forward player in turn.
An unfortunate own goal on 67 minutes looked to be the only way to beat the inspired shot stopper until the final ten minutes when New Forest, who played with admirable spirit, finally ran out of steam against a wave of attacks.
Miller set up skipper Shelley Towers for a far post header, then laid on Knell's second. Paynter completed a fine hat-trick on 85 minutes, Fowell scored her own second three minutes later and Miller capped a fine performance by rounding off the scoring with her first and Poole's twelth.
This late burst was a harsh way for New Forest to finish their first competitive match of the season but was a reflection of how determined Poole were and the range of attacking talent they had . But for the fine work of both keepers and some hard working defenders. the deficit could have been worse.
