SSE Women's FA Cup - Road to the Final
Whitley Bay are in the midst of another fine FA Cup run and they have reached the First Round Proper after beating Woolton Ladies 1-0, Molly Turnbull scoring the only goal of the game. The North East League side will now be up against Tranmere Rovers, who won their twice-delayed tie 3-0 against Steel City Wanderers with strikes from Charlotte Cloy (2) and Emily Thomas.
Tranmere Rovers Ladies were formed in 1990 under the wings of Football in the Community and Steve Williams. They played their first competitive game against Bury in the North West Women's League Division Four. Over the years, the team became really successful and gained consecutive promotions until they reached the highest tier of women's football, where they remained for a number of years and also reached two FA Women's Cup semi finals.
The team produced many players who went on to play for England, including the likes of Sue Smith and Jodie Taylor, which led to the forming of junior teams; under 10's, under 12's, under 14's & under 16's along with a reserve team.
After Steve's successful rein as manager, player Louise Edwards took over when he stepped down in 2002. Four years later, Louise stepped down with assistant manager Shirley Waring taking over. Shirley then resigned after the team were relegated in 2009. Louise Edwards then returned in interim role, however she is still in charge to this day, with Shirley Waring as assistant!
The club is captained by Lynn Carter, a remarkable servant who has played for the club since she was nine and is still there at the age of 36. Charlotte Cloy, who netted twice in the last round, is leading scorer for the team which is in Northern Division One.
