FIFA have confirmed their list of International referees for 2016 and the prestigious list has included a new name from Wales.
Welsh Premier Women's League referee Cheryl Foster is included on the Women's International list of referees for the first time. Foster won 63 caps for the Wales international team and scored nine goals during her time as a player. She joins Charlotte Carpenter as the second FIFA Women's referee from Wales.
"When I finished playing [for Liverpool, Doncaster Belles and Wales] there was obviously a huge gap in my life in terms of participating in football," Cheryl told the league website. "My journey to becoming a referee started with a simple question, "Have you ever thought about refereeing?" I hadn't, but I did then I did! And the more I thought about, the more I felt I could make a contribution and it would give me that chance to be get back on the pitch! But I didn't think things would move so fast that I'd be a FIFA referee by my third season and it has been a steep learning curve and an amazing challenge.
"Playing for Wales was always a huge honour for both myself and my family - so to reach international standard as a referee is just as special and I am very excited. I see it as representing my country just as I did as a player. I have received so much support from the North East Wales Referee Association so I want to thank them for always believing that I could get to this point."
Cheryl has progressed through the successful FAW Referee Development groups.
