Lewes Football Club and Brighton & Hove's Newman College (the Sixth Form of Cardinal Newman Catholic School), are delighted to announce the launch of a Girls' Football Academy Programme commencing September 2016.
The partnership will offer a two year programme of high quality, full time education, as well as exceptional, academy-style coaching on Lewes Football Club's new £1m 3G FIFA approved pitch.
Girls between the ages of 16 and 19 will be able to combine quality football coaching with academic studies in order to develop their sporting skills further.
The purpose of the Academy is to identify and recruit young footballers of outstanding ability and to coach and educate them to reach their maximum potential, thereby giving them the very best chance of a career in football. The scheme is run in partnership with Lewes Ladies FC and, as a result, there is a direct link and pathway into the Lewes Ladies senior sides. The current First Team play in the FA Women's Premier League Southern Division and compete against the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion.
Newman College offers an exciting post-16 learning environment to help students achieve their goals, providing the best individualised pathway for every student with a wide selection of A-level and BTEC courses on offer. The new modern state-of-the-art Sixth Form Centre includes a Lecture Theatre, well stocked library, spacious classrooms and a café. Newman College has a long tradition of academic success — we aim for every student to work hard, have high personal expectations and succeed.
Graham Goldup, Senior Assistant Headteacher for Newman College Sixth Form said: "We are delighted to be introducing this new, exciting programme to 16-19 year old girls in the local area. Newman Lewes FC Girls' Football Academy is a fantastic opportunity for students to continue with their academic studies whilst also receiving first class football coaching. Here at Newman College, we have a wide range of courses on offer and have recently opened new state-of-the-art facilities. We are a highly successful Sixth Form and this new Girls' Football Academy is set to enhance our sports curriculum. We are really looking forward to celebrating our success in this joint venture."
Jacquie Agnew, Lewes Football Club Director of Ladies Football & Development, added: "These are exciting times for women's football and I am delighted that we are launching a Girls' Football Academy Partnership with Newman College. This will really help develop our future pipeline and the Academy will offer the best young players in this region the opportunity to develop into top class footballers, coupled with outstanding, full-time education at Newman College.
"We want the Newman Lewes FC Girls' Football Academy to become established as being one of the best in the country for its productivity and care of young players, and this partnership will enhance the reputation of Lewes FC and Newman College both on and off the field."
