Ravens swoop for victory

Ravens swoop for victory - 6 Jan 2016 - Women's Football NewsGateshead Rutherford Ravens saw off Premier Division opposition Boldon Villa in the Preliminary Round of the Durham County Cup this weekend.
It was a game which had everything including a hat-trick, a penalty and eight goals, as the Ravens - considered underdogs before the kick off - flew into the next round after winning 5-3.
It was last season's NERWFL winners who took the lead after 13 minutes, when Elizabeth Thompson-Clark unleashed a long range shot which flew past the diving Raven's goalkeeper, Katie McTague.
The Raven's started to create chances and on the 37th minute, Captain, Lynsey Wilkinson, got her first of three goals when she latched on to a Hayley Regan shot, prodding the ball past the Boldon keeper.
With the Raven's carrying the momentum, a stoppage in play did little to deter the black and reds. On the 45th minute they were rewarded for their pressing of the opposition when Tracey Embleton played a calm pass to Wilkinson, whose long-range shot skidded past the sprawling Boldon goalie.
Moments later the Gateshead side almost extended their lead but Autumn Colledge watched her left footed shot ricochet off the post.
Half time saw the Raven's head into the changing rooms, and out of the torrential downpour, with the slim lead, knowing only 45 minutes stood between them and round one.
The Raven's started the second half on top, just as they had finished the first, however on the 59th minute, Boldon were awarded a clear penalty when Alex Ross was brought down inside the 18-yard box. She stepped up and converted a well struck penalty, despite McTague guessing the right way.
Ross was on the score sheet again five minutes later when she intercepted a misplaced pass, chipping the ball over McTague.
Still undeterred and not at all out of the game, the Gateshead side kept pushing for the equaliser which came on the 72nd minute, as Wilkinson completed her hat-trick.
Two minutes later the Ravens restored their lead with Wilkinson turning provider as she played a perfect ball across the six yard box, for strike partner Elizabeth Campbell to slot into the back of the net.
Campbell got her second of the match and sealed the win on the 76th minute, when an Autumn College pass fell to her. She skipped past two Boldon defenders and rounded off the move with a smart finish.
Now very much on the front foot, the Ravens continued to push and create chances and were deserved winners as the final whistle blew.
