Bristol City 0 Yeovil Town 0
aet; Yeovil won 3-2 on penalties
Yeovil Town won a penalty shootout following a tense West Country derby and will take their place in the Fifth Round of the SSE Women's FA Cup.
Both teams' starting line ups included a number of players up against their former club and this led to a full blooded encounter in cold conditions at Stoke Gifford.
Yeovil started the match on the front foot and created early pressure, with Sarah Wiltshire crossing for Ann Marie Heatherson whose downward header was well saved at the near post by Hannah Reid. The Bristol City goalkeeper was called into action again when palming away a 20-yard strike from Nadia Lawrence.
City had struggled to cope with Yeovil's high pressing game during the early stages and sent a number of wayward passes across defence which kept them under pressure. However Willie Kirk's side began to get into their stride and created their first opportunity when a good pass by Jodie Brett was latched onto by Loren Dykes whose shot flew straight at Charlotte Haynes.
As both teams sought to take control of midfield, clear cut chances were scarce at either end despite the endeavours of both sides. The lively Millie Farrow attempted an overhead kick which was gathered by Haynes and shortly before half time, Frankie Brown's pass picked out Rosella Ayane who did not quite catch her shot cleanly but it forced Haynes to dive full length and palm the ball away.
The second half started in the same fashion as the first with Yeovil going on the offensive and Lawrence's pass fed Heatherson on the edge of the area but she dragged her left foot shot wide. Atlanta Primus then brought out a save from Reid with a long range effort.
Yeovil continued to press but a breakaway almost led to a good chance for City, Farrow outpacing two defenders and breaking through on goal but Haynes came off her line smartly to deny the striker with a smothering save.
The introduction of Olivia Fergusson gave City an extra threat going forward but at the other end, Yeovil had shouts for a penalty when Lawrence went down under a challenge from Hayley Ladd but the City defender, who had a fine game in the centre, had won the ball cleanly.
Yeovil were then presented with a great chance to win the game late on as a quick move ended with Sarah Wiltshire releasing Nicola Cousins through on goal. Reid did well to sprint from goal and deny Cousins with a challenge, the ball running loose to Wiltshire who took a touch before lobbing goalwards but a combination of Dykes and Corinne Yorston managed to get back and head away from in front of goal.
City had finished the ninety minutes well though and this continued as extra time began with Brett and Paige Sawyer probing from midfield. A quickly taken free kick almost caught Yeovil out as Yorston tapped aside for Ayane whose shot was saved by Haynes. Brett then lifted a free kick over and Farrow had a goal disallowed as City's strong spell continued.
The game went into the second period and the home side continued to look the more likely to score at this stage. A corner was half cleared as far as Ayane whose well struck volley brought out a superb save from Haynes, Fergusson had a goalbound shot from another corner blocked and a Sawyer shot lacked power, Haynes saving comfortably.
Then a brilliant run from the impressive Fergusson saw her get past three defenders before cutting the ball back from the goal line but Farrow missed her kick and Yeovil were able to clear.
City had had the better of things in extra time but Yeovil were to pass up the best chance of the match in the final minute. Ellie Curson and Sammy Quayle combined to find Wiltshire in space on the right edge of the area, she fired the ball across goal for unmarked Natasha Knapman but the substitute, who had been on the pitch for barely a minute later, blazed her shot on the turn over with the goal at her mercy.
This led the game into a penalty shootout and both teams started well, Ladd and Primus both finding the net with their first kicks. Yorston then shot wide and Lauren Townsend hit the post, before Haynes pulled off a save from Grace McCatty. Wiltshire stepped up to find the corner of the net and give Yeovil the lead. Farrow and Helen Bleazard then both converted their penalties, leaving Ayane needing to score to keep City in the tie. Haynes dived full length to touch her shot onto the post to clinch victory for her side and spark celebrations from the Yeovil players.
