Stevenage Ladies 0 Watford Development 2
Watford Development Under-19 team lifted the Hertfordshire FA Cup with a 2-0 victory over holders Stevenage Ladies at Letchworth.
Two second half goals saw the young Golden Girls home in a very even and well contested showpiece match in a competition which had been dominated in pre-WSL days by Watford Ladies. eight times winners between 2001 and 2010. Both teams are having fine seasons in their respective leagues and it was the Greater London League Premier Division leaders who saw off the second placed team in the Eastern Region League Premier Division.
Stevenage had the first dangerous attempt, an Amy Josland shot on the turn going inches past the far post on six minutes. The same player had another effort well held by Watford keeper Madison Gorton. Watford's first chance saw Megan Warner get a shot away which was well dealt with by Chrissy Roberts in the Stevenage goal on 11 minutes.
The Cup holders continued to look the more threatening with a header from player manager Josie North, then an Alex North shot. Watford's Aimee Durn went on a fine solo run which ended with a shot wide of goal on 28 minutes but the better chances continued to fall Stevenage's way. Two corners created danger in the Watford area and from the second, Domenique Godbeer poked a shot wide of goal from close in on 32 minutes.
As the break approached, Watford exerted some more concerted pressure on the opposition goal. Emma Bebbington got clear on the right twice, firing wide then being denied by Roberts who moved quickly to the edge of the area to block on 42 minutes.
Stevenage started brightly after half time, Josie North firing wide from the edge of the area and then Watford defender Katie Harris doing well to clear an inswinging corner off the line on 53 minutes. However, it was Watford Development who took the lead four minutes later.
Another good run by Durn was halted on the edge of the area but the ball broke for Chloe Farrell who lofted a shot over Roberts, against the underside of the bar and into the net.
The young Watford team seemed to grow in confidence as the half progressed and doubled their advantage when Bebbington was very quick to move on to a loose ball and round Roberts on 72 minutes.
Stevenage did find some forward momentum in the final ten minutes as they sought a way back into the contest. A fine move on 84 minutes saw a shot clip the bar before flying to safety, then a free kick was headed over from close range by Godbeer as the match reached added time.
Watford had defended very well throughout to keep Stevenage at bay and then took their chances to clinch the County Cup for a club continuing a long tradition of developing fine young players and teams.
