Jeanfield Swifts got their debut season in the Scottish Women's Premier League off to a great start with a 5-1 victory over Queen's Park in SWPL2 on Sunday.
Jade Mc Donald was one of the goalscorers in the win and she told Women's Soccer Scene that the result should stand them in good stead for the season ahead. "I think it's given us a real confidence boost," she said. "We expected it to be a good game and a real test as we had a few close matches last season against Queen's Park.
"We were all very happy with the win. We worked really hard and played some great football. It just shows that hard work through pre-season pays off."
Danni McGinley took the headlines by scoring four goals and whilst acknowledging that feat, Jade pointed out that the win was earned by a good all round team performance. "Yeah, she [Danni] was great!" she laughed. "The whole team played very well. Every single player put in 110% and worked for each other and the subs who came on were great. I couldn't fault anyone's efforts."
The game also marked Jeanfield's first home match at McDiarmid Park, home of St Johnstone FC, where they will be playing their home matches this season. "We feel very privileged getting to use the facilities at McDiarmid," admitted Jade. "It's such a good feeling training on the same pitch we will play on a Sunday.
"It's great for the team to have these facilities on our doorstep and have full access."
This week, Jeanfield travel to Hamilton Academical, who have made a number of signings to strengthen their squad and also started well with a victory. Jade is anticipating a tough game on Sunday: "They are a very experienced side with a lot of great players and played at this level before. It will be a good chance for us to test ourselves."
Looking at the bigger picture, with so many new teams in the newly formed division, Jade is expecting things to be close this season. "I think it will be a tightly contested one," she said. "It's the unknown for a lot of teams and I think there will be a lot of surprising results."
