Sheffield Wednesday reserves were confirmed as Sheffield & Hallamshire Women's County League Division One Champions with a game still left to play, matching their feat of two years ago.
Manager Trevor Fox and the team played hosts to Beighton Magpies in their penultimate game of the season. The team started the game knowing that three points would see them win the league as only Dronfield Town could catch the Owls and pip them to the title.
The game was neck and neck for the first half but Wednesday took a two-goal lead before being pulled back to 2-1, Beighton then tested the Reserves but a third goal killed the game and it finished 3-1, then the celebrations started and champagne began to flow.
With the title won, the final game of the season was against Dronfield who had managed to stay unbeaten all season. Dronfield had edged the game and won 1-0 in the previous meeting a couple of weeks earlier but it was Wednesday that edged the final game and finished 1-0 victors with a goal from leading goalscorer Lucy Ridley.
Wednesday's success was all the more notable and remarkable due to the fact that, mainly due to bad weather, the team had only played ONE league match before the final week in January, and that game had been back in October.
The reserve team's achievement of winning the title has crowned a very good season overall for Sheffield Wednesday Ladies FC. The club's record throughout the campaign has included:
First team - NERWFL Southern Division third place finish
Reserves - Champions SHCWFL Division One
Under-18s - SHGCL Plate winners and third place finish
Under-16s - SHGCL Division Two Champions
Under-15s - SHGCL Division One runners-up and losing Cup finalists
Under-13s - SHGCL Division One third place
Under-12s - SHGCL Division One runners-up
Under-10s - SHGCL Losing Cup finalists
