QPR edge Development battle

QPR edge Development battle - 20 May 2016 - Women's Football News

Queens Park Rangers Development lifted the John Greenacre Memorial Trophy in the last of three GLWFL Cup Finals at Hampton & Richmond Borough FC.

In a fitting climax to an exciting day, two contenders for the still undecided Premier Division title provided a closely fought contest with QPR beating AFC Wimbledon Development.

All three goals came early on in a fast paced encounter. QPR took the lead when Jessica Paynter delivered a well flighted free kick from the halfway line which found Erin Pope at the far post on eight minutes. Within a minute, Dons were level. Emily Barnard broke clear on the left and drove a shot under QPR keeper Ella Hunkin.

Georgia Heasman nearly gave Dons the lead with a lovely turn and shot which flew just over but it was QPR who scored again, a superb solo effort from Emily Hill on 23 minutes. Cutting across the area from the right wing, she beat two challenges before placing the ball wide of keeper Ashleigh McGuigan for a goal worthy of settling a cup final.

Although that was the end of the scoring, the chances came regularly throughout the rest of an even encounter. Bernice Tully came very close to equalising on the half hour with a shot which keeper Hunkin deflected against the underside of the bar. Heasman had an effort ruled out for offside on 41 minutes then QPR had a corner scrambled off the line just before the break.

The second half continued in the same vein McGuigan saved well from QPR's Hill, Dons had three corners in succession all cleared with difficulty. Probably the key moment came on 79 minutes when Sian Wylie got free and drove a low shot headed for the bottom corner but Hunkin pulled off an excellent save.

QPR nearly sealed the result late on through Pope and Georgia Allen but were only able to relax and celebrate on the final whistle of another highly enjoyable and well organised GLWFL Finals day.
