After two near misses in the last two seasons, Wymondham Town have landed the Norfolk Women's League title after what has been a memorable season for the club.
In Alex Guy's first full season back in the hot seat at Wymondham Ladies, the team set their aspirations high with promotion the main aim, a strong FA Cup run and League and County Cup run also being high on the agenda.
This season saw the Wymondham reach the Fourth Round Qualifying of the SSE Women's FA Cup after wins over Roade (6-2), Moulton (3-0) and the most famous victory in the ladies history, beating Cambridge United, who play three league above in the FA Women's Premier League, 1-0 in front of over 300 people with the winning goal coming from Sally Hammerton. The Fourth Round Qualifying saw Wymondham, who were the final Norfolk team in the competition, play Bedford Ladies at Kings Head Meadow, but they were unable to match the result of the previous round.
Wymondham have been regulars in the NWGFL Cup Final, having been a finalist for the past three seasons, winning twice. Wymondham played last season's League Champions Aylsham Town in the Final having beaten North Walsham, Brandon and Lynn in previous rounds. After taking the lead on 70 minutes through Laura Wiseman, Wymondham conceded two late goals, from a corner and then a free kick deep into stoppage time and ended up losing 2-1.
Due to the high number of FA Cup games being played in the early stages of the season, Wymondham were playing catch-up in the league and went the full season with only one league defeat, to runners-up Thorpe United. The team notched up 35 points from a possible 42 and had the league's best goal difference with 42, averaging 4 goals scored and less than one conceded a game. Wymondham have been close, finishing in the top three for the past three seasons, but managed to clinch the title for only the second time in the club's history, gaining promotion to the Eastern Region Women's Football League.
In addition to the success of the team on the pitch, Wymondham Town FC, chaired by Andy Gardiner, have secured the lease of Kings Head Meadow, home of Wymondham Town FC after long negotiations with the local council, much to the delight of the club and town.
Looking forward to next season, due to the success of the team and club, Wymondham Ladies will also be developing by introducing a second ladies team, who will play in the NWGFL and be managed by Gemma Hamilton-Rout.
Alex Guy told Women's Soccer Scene: "This season has been fantastic for the girls, making history in the FA Cup, reaching the League Cup Final for the fourth year in a row and winning the League.
"I set the expectations high at the start of the season and the players knew exactly what was expected of them. They have delivered the most successful season the team has ever seen and I am proud of the development and togetherness of the squad.
"We are of course going to enjoy the success of this season but the squad are due back in training soon and we know it's going to take a lot to continue to improve and compete at the next level up. It's great we've got a second team being set up and that Gemma has taken it on. She's a person and player I've known and worked with for a very long time and together we are looking forward to taking this club further and continue its progression."
Rachel Cossey captained the side to their success and Sally Hammerton was leading scorer, while Amber Cantwell and Kayleigh Holloway also had a goal tally in double figures. Kayleigh Holloway was also named as Manager's and Players' Player of the Year and Leanne Smith as Most Improved Players, and the WTFC Board Player of the Season went to Gemma Hamilton-Rout.
Pre-season will start on Tuesday 7th June at 6.30pm and anybody interested, either for the first team or reserves, should contact Alex Guy on alex-guy@Hotmail.co.uk or (07934) 492399.
