Avilla makes Addicks move
 Women's Football News 28 Jun 2016

Avilla makes Addicks move - 28 Jun 2016 - Women's Football NewsCharlton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of Northern Ireland international winger Avilla Bergin from Tottenham Hotspur.

Bergin put pen to paper this week after spending two years in North London, where she scored an impressive 18 goals from 39 matches in the FA Women's Premier League.

She was a key part of the team that won the Ryman Cup and FAWPL Cup double last season, beating her new club in the Ryman Cup final on penalties.

Bergin initially turned down the chance to join Charlton midway through last season, preferring to see the campaign out with Spurs, but now, she says, is 'the right time to move on to a new club and a new challenge'.

She added: "I think that this is the right direction to go in terms of winning the league and also for player development for myself.

"In respect to Tottenham, I'm sure they'll sign some people this summer and advance as well [but] I just feel like right now Charlton are a bit closer to winning the league and if I can help them do that then all the better. If we could pick up a couple of cups along the way, that would be perfect.

"I can't wait to get going now - luckily I haven't had too long out from football because I had European qualifiers for Northern Ireland recently but I've had a week or two now so I'm ready to get going again."

The Dublin-born 24-year-old, who is equally comfortable playing as a striker, began her career in Ireland, before moving to the United States of America, where she studied at Fordham University and represented their 'Rams' women's soccer programme. Moving to the UK, she landed at Loughborough University, where she played for Loughborough Students, before joining Spurs after graduating.

Bergin has represented Northern Ireland at every level since under 14, going on to make her senior debut aged just 16; she now has 12 senior caps, and has scored three international goals.

Earlier this month, Bergin set up Everton striker Simone Magill to score just 11 seconds into Ireland's 4-0 European Championships qualification win over Georgia.
