Bristol City 2 (Farrow 41, Emslie 58) Millwall Lionesses 1 (Hincks 42)
Bristol City went back level on points with WSL 2 leaders Yeovil Town after narrowly getting the better of Millwall Lionesses at Stoke Gifford.
The home side did create the first opportunity with Millie Farrow having a shot charged down but it was Millwall who almost made the breakthrough in the seventh minute. A pass from Jodie Brett was intercepted by Rinsola Babajide who made her way to the goal line and cut back for Charlotte Gurr who was challenged by Katie Jones, Brett then making amends for her error by blocking the resulting shot from Ashlee Hincks. The resulting corner, taken by Hincks, looked to be swinging inside the far post but Chloe Arthur did well to get back and head the ball away.
Millwall were looking sharp during the opening stages and there was another scare for City as Jones' back pass almost let in Megan Wynne but Caitlin Leach was quick off her line to save. This led to an indirect free kick being awarded, from which Hincks' shot brought out another important block from Brett.
City responded with Farrow having a shot blocked by Jordan Butler but Hincks was in lively form at the other end and, after chasing a ball down the right, drove a low shot which was curling inside the far post but was denied by a great save from Leach at full stretch.
Arthur drove a long range shot wide for City, with Bonnie Horwood firing a dipping shot narrowly over at the other end, before a fine move led to City taking the lead as half time approached. Arthur found space on the right and picked out Brett who skipped past a defender in the area before setting up Farrow to sweep the ball home.
The home crowd were silenced barely a minute later though; Hincks drove in a cross from the right which was fumbled by Leach and the keeper could do nothing to prevent the ball from bouncing into the net for the equaliser. Babajide then hit the side netting as Millwall finished the first half on top and perhaps disappointed at not taking a lead into the break.
City looked far more assured in the second half and it took good goalkeeping from Sarah Quantrill to prevent Farrow from getting in with a smothering save from Flo Allen's pass.
The home side were to go back in front just before the hour mark though, Leighanne Robe's pass out of defence was cut out and Farrow slid a neat ball into the path of Claire Emslie who clipped her shot over Quantrill to restore her side's lead.
Farrow and Emslie were combining well up front and the latter was unlucky with a fierce strike after cutting in from the right which flashed narrowly over the bar. Emslie then drilled an angled free kick on target but an alert Quantrill did well to get across and fist the ball away.
With Brett commanding matters in midfield, there were fewer scares for City in the second half and they were able to see the game out for three important points. Substitute Paige Sawyer forced a smart save from Quantrill at her near post following more good work from Farrow as City picked up the result they wanted to boost their promotion challenge.
