Forest Green Rovers have announced they are to withdraw from the FA Women's Premier League with immediate effect.
The Gloucestershire side were crowned South West Division One Champions in 2014-15 but found life a lot harder in the Southern Division last season. FGR finished second from bottom but received a reprieve from relegation due to Brighton & Hove Albion winning promotion to the FA WSL.
The Southern Division will therefore operate with eleven teams this season.
The club has issued the following statement:
"The FGR Ladies committee last night made the decision to withdraw the first team from the Women's Premier League for the forthcoming season.
Following the departure of key players over the summer and several players leaving in the last few weeks the squad available would have been very young and not as competitive at such a high level of football. We have a duty of care not expose them to that environment at that age, for what could be very harmful to their development both physically and mentally.
We are currently in talks with the South West Women's football league and early signs are encouraging.
We would like to extend our thanks to the Women's Premier League who have been very supportive. We wish all the remaining teams the best of luck for the coming season."
