Man City progress with late Beattie goal
 Women's Football News 4 Sep 2016

Manchester City 1 (Beattie 79) Arsenal 0
A late goal from Jennifer Beattie has taken Manchester City through to the Final of the Continental Tyres Cup for the second time in three years at the expense of Arsenal, who have won the trophy in four of the past five years.

It was a tale of missed chances for Arsenal. Danielle Carter spurned several opportunities while Asisat Oshoala also struggled in front of goal. Carter did hit the crossbar shortly before City opened the scoring, but it was Scotland international Beattie who bagged the crucial score.

Both sides struggled to get going, with defences firmly on top, and though Oshoala did have one clear chance in the first half, it was snuffed out by Steph Houghton.

Arsenal looked more likely to score until Casey Stoney brought down Nikita Parris outside the box, gifting City a free kick in a promising position. Toni Duggan's attempt cannoned off an Arsenal player and allowed Beattie to smash home the winner from six yards out.

Pedro Martinez Losa's side responded well and it took a goal line clearance by Houghton from Kelly Smith to keep City ahead. Arsenal are therefore knocked out of the competition before the Final for the first time since its inception in 2011 and City, the only other team to have won the trophy, now face Birmingham City at their own Academy Stadium.
