Yeovil stung by Bees' fightback

Yeovil stung by Bees' fightback - 12 Sep 2016 - Women's Football NewsYeovil Town 2 (Quinn 18,45) London Bees 3 (Clarke 46, Wilson 55, Watts pen 71)
London Bees blew the WSL 2 title race wide open by coming from two goals behind to beat leaders Yeovil Town 3-2 in a pulsating match at Huish Park.

The result was no less than the Bees deserved after a superb second half display which resulted in their best league result of the season.

The opening stages of the game were evenly contested without any clear opportunities at either end until Nicola Cousins unleashed a shot from the edge of the area on 17 minutes which was palmed around the post by Sophie Harris. Lucy Quinn took the resulting corner and her inswinging kick was misjudged by both Harris and her defenders, finding the far corner of the net.

Harris was to atone for this by making a good smothering save from Helen Bleazard as she latched onto Ann Marie Heatherson's pass and the Bees keeper pulled off another fine stop to keep out a fiercely struck volley by Danielle Carlton.

In first half injury time, Yeovil took what looked to be a firm grip on the game as Quinn broke down the left and beat Harris with an angled shot for her second goal of the game.

If London Bees needed a boost as the second half, it came within a minute of the restart. Paula Howells drove a low ball across the face of goal and Evie Clarke reacted well to slide in and direct her shot past Charlotte Haynes to bring her side back into the match.

Yeovil responded with Heatherson having a shot on the turn well saved by Harris but the visitors' tails were up. Leading scorer Jo Wilson produced a good piece of opportunism to bring them level shortly afterwards, anticipating an underhit back pass by Kayleigh Green and stole in to take the ball round Haynes and slot into the empty net.

The movement of Wilson in particular was causing a lot of problems for an increasingly jittery looking Yeovil defence and Emma Beckett was controlling matters in midfield. Deanna Cooper impressed once again when carrying the ball out of defence and the centre half went close to scoring with a shot from the edge of the area which flashed just wide.

Ellie Curson forced a save from Harris with a long range effort but the momentum was with the Bees and an instinctive volley from Nikki Watts was just over the bar. Two minutes later though, more good play by Wilson saw her get behind the Yeovil defence and slide the ball to the edge of the area for Holly Greenwood whose shot struck Carlton's arm and a penalty was awarded. Watts stepped up to beat Haynes from the spot and send her side in front for the first time.

Yeovil threw players forward to try and get themselves back in the game with Quinn and Curson both bringing out smart saves from Harris. The visitors were being pushed onto the defensive with Cooper and Merrick Will in particular staying strong, but they still looked dangerous on the counter attack. Clarke drew a save from Haynes following more good work by Howells and Wilson burst into the area where her shot took a huge deflection off Hannah Short and hit the side netting. Carlton also had to produce a good piece of defending to prevent Clarke from going through on goal.

Heatherson drilled a free kick inches wide and when winning a corner deep into injury time, Haynes was sent forward to join the attack. The kick was met by Cousins who directed her header goalwards but Sophie Fogarty was well placed to clear off the line and complete a hard but well earned victory for her team.
