Resilient England earn point

England picked up their second point at the FIFA Women's Under-17 World Cup after a hard fought goalless draw with Nigeria.

Head coach John Griffiths made three changes from the side which claimed a late, late draw with North Korea in the opening Group C match on Saturday. Grace Smith, Hannah Cain and Connie Scofield came in for Kelsey Pearson, Anna Filbey and Niamh Charles respectively, but it was one of the goalscorers at the weekend, Georgia Stanway, who had the best chances for the Lionesses.

The Manchester City midfielder hit a shot over the top on 17 minutes, arguably the clearest opportunity England carved out in the first half. She then hit a 20-yard free kick wide just before goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck tipped over Catherine Kennedy's long punt forward at the other end.

Nigeria were the better side after the break but England's defence stood firm, with captain and centre back Lotte Wubben-Moy leading by example. There was a heart-in-your-mouth moment for Hollie Olding when she deflected Folashade Ijamilusi's shot towards goal, but thankfully for England the ball crept just past the post. Nikyu Bala's side continued to press and although they totalled 32 attempts, only five were on target.

Hannah Cain went close for England when she shot just wide with only Chiamaka Nnadozie to beat whilst Stanway had a great chance to take all three points in added time, but she could only blaze over from the right hand side of the box.

England's final group match is against Brazil on Saturday (2pm BST).
