Town turn it around

WPL Division 1 South East News - Town turn it around - 29 Nov 2016 - Women's Football NewsDenham Utd 1 Ipswich Town 2
Ipswich Town grabbed a last gasp away win over Denham United in their FAWPL Division One South East encounter at the Den to move above their opponents and into mid-table.

Having equalised late in the game, Town then found the net with virtually the final touch to take the three points. An evenly contested game seemed to be headed for a draw when Lindsay Cooper headed home powerfully at the near post from a corner and there was just time for the restart before the final whistle.

Ipswich started well with Natasha Thomas drawing the first save from Elizabeth Rose. Denham's Alissa Down created the danger for the home side, a well placed free kick causing a scramble in the area as Town keeper Leanne Smith was injured trying to claim the ball. Lauren Cox then headed a Down corner over the bar from close range on 28 minutes.

Ipswich went very close on the half hour, Thomas crossing for Georgie Morton to hit a volley well blocked by Rose, with Down clearing the follow up shot off the line. Within a minute Denham had opened the scoring, Cox finishing well with a low shot having been played in behind the Ipswich back line.

Denham nearly doubled their lead on 39 minutes, Cox turning provider with a right wing cross half cleared and Annie Hewitt driving in a low shot well held by Smith.

After the break, Thomas broke clear to fire in a cross which no Town colleague could reach, then Denham's Down was foiled by a fine Smith save when through on goal. A deep Denham corner found Jo Torr and her powerful shot cannoned off the post to safety on 62 minutes. The best move of the match on 71 minutes saw Denham string together five passes down the right side before a cross reached sub Jenny Banfield fifteen yards out. A first time effort flew over the bar and Ipswich were still just one goal down.

The visitors came on strong as the match entered the final fifteen minutes. Good blocking denied Thomas and Sophie Welton fired the rebound high and wide from a tight angle but the equaliser came on 82 minutes when Laura Guyon was played clear on the left and curled a lovely finish beyond Rose.

The teams seemed to have cancelled each other out as the match moved deep into added time. Ipswich forced a corner on the right and Cooper timed her run perfectly to meet the delivery at the near post and head the ball high into the Denham net.

Defeat from the final move of the match was harsh on Denham, especially as they had gone close to establishing a decisive lead on more than one occasion. However Ipswich had looked dangerous before equalising and had kept going well despite trailing for much of a good contest.
