Haringey Borough 2 AFC Sudbury 2
Haringey Borough, Eastern Region League Premier Division leaders, battled back twice to earn a 2-2 draw at their Coles Park home against a very competitive AFC Sudbury team.
A late Brooke Hills penalty rescued a point for the hosts in a match where both teams had periods of dominance and notable for outstanding individual displays by members of both line ups.
After a minute's applause to honour the memory of Haringey Borough Women manager Steve Browne, who sadly passed away on New Year's Day, the Suffolk visitors started by taking a third minute lead, Sophie Jeffery being given time and space to drive in from 20 yards.
Borough were soon on the attack, creating a number of dangerous situations before Jessica Appeagyei ran clear of the Sudbury defence and drove home the equaliser past keeper Penny Everett on 17 minutes.
The remainder of the opening half was an even battle with both defences covering effectively and neither keeper severely tested as efforts on goal were mainly from distance.
Sudbury started the second half well and Jeffery notched a fine opportunist second on 52 minutes, intercepting a short goal kick before chipping the ball over advancing keeper Cherkish Young.
Haringey poured forward to find a second equaliser with Klesha Darroux having some good runs on the left and Morgan Lundberg prominent in midfield. However the attackers were frequently caught offside and then when Appeagyei was through on goal, she was denied by a superb tackle by Rebecca Thrower.
At the other end, the outstanding Jeffery went close to a hat-trick with a drive narrowly wide, then a fine through ball sent Mia Etheridge clear, but keeper Young was quick off her line to get a crucial touch to send the ball wide on 76 minutes.
The 84th minute equaliser came when Everett saved a deflected shot by her right hand post, but the ball was recycled into the area and a Haringey attacker was brought down as she attempted a shot. After a lengthy injury delay, Hills calmly placed the spot kick high to Everett's left.
Sudbury responded well to this setback and had the better of the final minutes, forcing three corners which tested the home team's resolve but the contest ended all square after a good battle on an emotional afternoon for the host club.
