Scotland beat Cyprus Cup holders
 Women's Football Scotland International News - 7 Mar 2017

Scotland 3 Austria 1
Scotland put in a stunning performance in a deserved 3-1 victory over Cyprus Cup holders Austria in their final group game.

The Austrians went into the game high on confidence after sweeping aside New Zealand 3-0 on Friday.

Both sides were at each other's throats from the outset and in the second half the game came to life with Jane Ross, Leanne Ross and Lisa Evans on the scoresheet.

The result now sets up a match against Wales in the 5th/6th placing game on Wednesday in Paralimni, kick off 12.30pm (UK time).

It was an extremely open affair and after defending an early onslaught Scotland had a brilliant opportunity to take the lead from a corner but Joelle Murray directed her header wide of the upright.

They continued to probe but failed to test the Austrian goalkeeper.

On her 197th Scotland appearance Gemma Fay was kept busy and pulled off three crucial saves at the end of the half which proved instrumental to the victory.

Jane Ross celebrated her 100th cap on Friday against Korea Republic and is now one away from 50 goals after notching on the 58th minute.

A Joelle Murray free kick provided the assist for the Manchester City striker to rifle home from the edge of the area.

Gemma Fay was replaced by Shannon Lynn and one of her first jobs was to pick the ball out the back of the net after 65 minutes. Nicole Billa latched onto a long ball and rounded Lynn before smashing home.

After 77 minutes Lisa Evans saw a fierce shot palmed away but a minute later Scotland took the lead for a second time.

The Bayern Munich winger dashed down the flank, scampering by the opposition before delivering a pinpoint cross that substitute Leanne Ross was able to hammer home.

On the 90th minute, Evans then took centre stage to deliver a memorable goal. Lizzie Arnot broke down an Austrian attack and darted from her own half to assist Evans who cut inside and unleashed a curling effort which sailed into the net and resulted in a jubilant pile up.

Afterwards Evans told www.scottishfa.co.uk: "We put it in a really good shift today and deserved the win.

"We knew they were going to be aggressive and try and bully us off the ball but we were up for the fight and more than matched them.

"They are at the Euros as well so these are the teams we want to be competing against. To beat them is a big confidence boost and shows other teams what we're capable of.

"It was nice personally for me to score. I enjoy being allowed to go into those position that allows me get shots away."
