WPL South News - Glory glory night at the Lane - 21 Apr 2017 - Women's Football NewsTottenham Hotspur 4 West Ham Utd 0
Tottenham Hotspur clinched the FAWPL Southern Division title with three matches to spare after a 4-0 victory over West Ham in front of an impressive 2,140 spectators at White Hart Lane.
The club's first ever competitive match at the men's club's stadium saw the greatest season in a long history crowned by lifting the League trophy at the end of a thoroughly professional display, presented to Spurs captain Jenna Schillachi by former Tottenham and England star Gary Mabbutt.
After an even opening quarter hour, Wendy Martin nearly opened the score with a near post flick which hit the bar. It was Josie Green who made the breakthrough on 18 minutes, her long range shot proving too strong for Hammers keeper Lottie Ivison.
The visitors moved the ball neatly at times but were unable to trouble a strong Spurs defence. A number of crosses and corners troubled the Hammers defence but they held firm till the break.
Spurs doubled their advantage on 55 minutes when Green played Bianca Baptiste clear on the right and her cross was neatly converted by Martin. Sub Nikita Whinett started and finished the third goal after an exchange of passes with Martin and Spurs stepped up the pace as the second half progressed.
Ivison denied Baptiste with a fine save at her near post but the pressure mounted and it was Baptiste, dangerous all evening on the right of the attack, who crashed home the fourth from close range to complete the victory.
There were excellent performances all over the pitch from a confident Spurs team, Renee Hector and Jenna Schillaci strong at the back, Lucia Leon tireless up and down the right side, Green and Riana Soobadoo moving the ball confidently in midfield.
Despite the fine achievements so far, Tottenham have a very challenging end to the season. Two more Cup Finals await against Charlton Athletic before the biggest test of all...a FAWPL Championship play-off match against Blackburn Rovers at the end of May.
Tottenham Hotspur:
Toni-Anne Wayne, Lucia Leon, Leah Rowle, Sophie McLean, Josie Green, Bianca Baptiste, Wendy Martin, Jenna Schillachi, Riana Soobadoo, Renee Hector, Kelley Blanchflower. Subs: Megen Lynch, Maya Vio, Eartha Pond, Nikita Whinnett, Shannon Moloney.
