English County and other Leagues News - Goldenhill celebrate league title - 21 Apr 2017 - Women's Football News
Goldenhill Wanderers last week clinched the Staffordshire County Women's League after a magnificent first season following their formation.
The ladies team was formed in 2016 by Nathan Ball and Dave Quinton, who are the Manager and Assistant Manager respectively. Twelve players were kept from last season's squad, which were playing for Ref Street and Leek CSOB until they merged in March 2016.
The season began with a 1-1 draw against Bradwell Belles but from that point, Goldenhill went on a ten-match winning run which took them away from any challenging teams and, although the run came to an end when they drew 1-1 with Abbey Hulton last week, it was the point that they needed in order to confirm themselves as Champions.
"Since 4th March last year, we haven't lost a league game, winning 16 and drawing five," Nathan Ball told Women's Soccer Scene. "I think last Sunday's game was a real important one, that we needed to stay focused, as we were playing second placed Abbey Hulton who we had beaten 7-1 in the previous league game.
"We knew that they needed to win all four games and we had to lose four games for them to catch us, which meant it would come down to goal difference. Holly Fowell got the equalising goal for us, dead on half time, and we finished the game 1-1 to ensure we had won the league.
"Every game has been important and there has been some very good results."
Goldenhill have also reached the Final of the league's Challenge Cup, where they will take on Norton Athletic at Stafford Town FC on Sunday 14th May.
The team is captained by Connie Shaw-Peake and top scorer is Holly Ellison, who has scored 31 times in 18 games whilst other important goal contributions have been made by Beth Caddy (17), Holly Fowell (13) and Tara Harrison (13).
"Next season, we are looking at adding a Development side as we will hopefully move into the West Midlands Regional League," added Ball who, as well as Dave Quinton, is assisted by Dec Sarge and First Team Coach Marlon Day.
Goldenhill Wanderers squad: Rachel Lightfoot, Laura Stephenson, Chelsea Maiklem, Natalie Scott, Joanne Embury, Laura Hardy, Kayleigh Baker, Jen Micklewright, Chelsey Berwick, Jessica Smith, Danni Windsor, Donna Hadley, Natasha Holt, Katie Chesters, Connie Shaw-Peake, Samantha Lindop, Ashleigh Grimes, Jamie Smith, Katie Sawyer, Bethany Caddy, Tara Harrison, Louise Kelly, Jessica Stirley, Holly Ellison, Holly Fowell.
