Lewes win first major trophy
 Women's Football WPL South News - 27 Apr 2017

Lewes 4 Huddersfield Town 0
Lewes lifted the FAWPL Premier League Plate with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Huddersfield Town in the Final at Brackley.

A close game was anticipated with both teams having occupied similar positions in their respective divisions during the season but the Rookettes settled down the quicker and were rewarded with six minutes on the clock. Katie McIntyre's corner was met by Rebecca Carter whose header came back off the post, as far as McIntyre who returned the ball into the area for Georgia Bridges who headed in from close range.

Lewes continued to have the better of matters but as half time approached, Huddersfield were almost back on level terms when Charley Evans' pass released Kate Mallin on goal. Lewes goalkeeper Lauren Dolbear raced from her line and did enough to prevent Mallin from getting in a shot, forcing her to pass to Emily Heckler who fired over a by now well-protected goal.

Huddersfield started the second half a lot better and enjoyed a lot more possession but just before the hour mark, Dani Biglin attempted to intercept a Claire Capon pass but was unable to control the ball and Sian Heather stole in and crossed; Laura Carter collided with her centre half while trying to gather and Danielle Lane was on hand to slot home the second goal.

Heckler almost got in at the other end as she chased a long ball forward but she was denied by a good piece of covering from Tammy Waine. The two-goal lead had given Lewes a lot of confidence as they kept possession and a decisive third came with eleven minutes remaining. A short corner led to Rachel Palmer whipping in a delightful cross to the far post, where Bridges rose highest to power home her second header on the day.

Kellie Larkin curled a shot narrowly over from the edge of the area as the Rookettes sought to crown their day with a fourth and it came late on, following a foul on Bridges 20 yards from goal. Palmer stepped up to plant her shot into the top corner, past a helpless Laura Carter, to put the seal on her side's first ever national trophy success.
