QK take Junior Cup honours

English County and other Leagues News - QK take Junior Cup honours - 28 Apr 2017 - Women's Football NewsQK Southampton lifted the Hampshire County Women's League Junior Cup after a 4-0 win over Division Three rivals Gosport Falcons at Winchester City FC.

In their second season as a team, QK won their first silverware whilst Falcons, in their debut campaign, have achieved the remarkable feat of contesting two Cup Finals.

QK started on the front foot and were two goals to the good inside ten minutes. Player of the match Rachael Cardy headed home a free kick on two minutes, then Chelsea Swain hit a superb 25-yard second six minutes later.

Any thoughts that this would be an easy win were quickly forgotten as Gosport roared back into the contest. Megan Gratton threatened from a through ball then sent a free kick inches wide. Jess Pidgely hit a post with a shot on the run for QK but Falcons had efforts from Abbie Mason, well saved by Shannon Broadhurst, and Lauren Aldridge who shot over as the game reached the half hour.

Charlie Scott was inches away from opening Falcons' account on 36 minutes but QK went to the break two goals ahead after an entertaining half. The crucial third came five minutes after the restart when Cardy was tripped and got up to convert from the spot.

Falcons continued to create chances but the finishing was wayward and Broadhurst made some good saves, Zoe Jessey went close twice for Falcons whilst at the other end keeper Natasha Stallard was alert in coming off her line to help defenders stop the threat from Pidgely and Cardy, before the latter went off with cramp.

Despite all their dangerous attacks Falcons simply could not find the net and instead it was Kelly Bailey who completed the scoring with a low shot in added time to seal a very good win for QK Southampton.
