Everton moved to the top of the FA WSL 2 Spring Series table with a 1-0 win over previous leaders Durham Women.
Gabby George headed them into the lead from a Danielle Turner corner with twelve minutes on the clock for what proved to be the only goal of the game. Simone Magill struck the bar and Rachael Laws made a good save from Claudia Walker as Everton sought to increase their advantage, before the Wildcats pressed for an equaliser in the second half. Zoe Ness and Rachel Lee were both denied by Kirstie Levell and Beth Hepple hit the post with a free kick late on, but Everton held on for a result which means that they will finish on top of the table if they win their last two games, the first of which is against Watford at Goodison Park on Sunday.
The other WSL 2 match played over the weekend saw Brighton & Hove Albion and Doncaster Rovers Belles battle out a goalless draw at Lancing. The Belles had the better of the chances during the match but found Brighton goalkeeper Emma Byrne in outstanding form, including good first half saves from Christie Murray and Courtney Sweetman-Kirk. The key moment of the game came just before the hour when Doncaster were awarded a penalty for a foul on Murray but once again, Byrne denied the normally lethal Sweetman-Kirk from the spot to help secure the Seagulls a valuable point.
