Leyton Orient 3 Crawley Wasps 1
Leyton Orient completed a memorable season with a London & South East League and Cup double which was achieved after a League Cup Final victory over Crawley Wasps at Maidstone United FC's Gallagher Stadium.
Already winners of the league, two first half goals gave the O's a strong start and despite a spirited rally by the Sussex team during the second half, a late third saw the Cup and League trophies both heading towards East London after a well contested match.
Orient took the lead on 11 minutes when Hayley Barton made a tricky run down the right and produced a perfect cross beyond Wasps keeper Marie Gillstroem for Jasmine Campbell to head home at the far post. Campbell then nearly doubled the lead with a powerful 20-yard shot just wide on 17 minutes. Barton then played in Ella Meadowcroft , but Gillstroem was quick off her line to save,
Sophie Le Marchand doubled the lead on 37 minutes, breaking clear on the left and finishing low past Gillstroem. Crawley, despite trailing, had created a number of promising positions in the opening half. The closest they came to scoring came from a right wing corner on 38 minutes, the ball ending up in Orient keeper Naomi Ogunde's hands on her line after a blocked header led to a goalmouth scramble. Crawley's Faye Rabson then shot wide after beating two defenders just before the break.
Gillstroem was soon back in action on the restart, tipping over an Ellie Davies cross. Leyre Bastyr then went close with a lob from distance hitting the post whilst Campbell sent a header just over the bar as O's sought a decisive third.
Crawley gradually played their way back into the match with Naomi Cole sending a shot just over the bar on 57 minutes. Substitutions gave Wasps an extra edge and determination as they pushed hard for a comeback.
It was Cole who found the net on 78 minutes, latching on to a right side cross before turning and firing high past Ogunde.
Wasps continued to press, winning a number of free kicks and corners, but the Orient defence stood firm. As time ran out, the champions found a third goal to settle the match. Barton took a free kick from wide on the left and her well struck effort flew beyond Gillstroem into the far corner.
Both teams had provided good entertainment for a sizeable crowd, a good showcase for the LSEWFL but it was Orient who were able to take possession of both trophies and prepare for FAWPL football in 2017-18.
